Vita | European Award of Excellence »City for Children«
[June 7th, 2011]
Laudation by Secretary General Frédéric Vallier, Council of European Municipalities and Regions:
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my pleasure to present the 3rd European Award of Excellence »City for Children« on the topic of Media Education to the
winners of category 1 "Participation through New Media".
For his category, the jury received a total of 29 applications from Cities around Europe. The aim of this category was to find projects that empower children and young people to actively and creatively produce media content and learn about the whole process - from producing to publishing. The jury had the difficult task of deciding on the three most outstanding projects since the quality of the submitted applications was very high.
I will start by presenting the third place in this category.
The project that made the third place stands out by using something that is very well known to explain something that is rather new: A bus full of technical equipment and pedagogical staff driven through the city and countryside to teach children and adolescents how to produce documentary media.
Since 2003, this "media bus" has been helping young people to develop their own contributions and publish them. This project stands out because it has high rates of participation and involves young people from all school forms, socio-economic situations and migration backgrounds.
Therefore, I feel honoured to present the 3rd place in the European Award of Excellence »City for Children« to the City of Hannover for the project "Hannover Media Bus"! Will the representatives of the City of Hannover and the project please come onto the stage?
